What Is Introspection?
There is truth in that saying, but while Socrates may have philosophized it in just seven words, it’s much more complex than that – this is a fast-paced world we inhabit. Your gadgets are ever-present, constantly buzzing, social media perpetually updates, and streaming services are always dropping new content to binge. How does anyone have time for introspection and self-reflection?
The reality of it is that the majority of humankind is living unexamined lives, and this is a tragedy in so many ways – to live blind, without knowing who you really are and what drives you to do what you do, is no way to live.
According to the dictionary introspection is, “the examination or observation of one’s own mental and emotional processes.”
Introspection is an important part of the human experience, one that the majority of us are missing out on.
And it shouldn’t be this way, but before we can continue, we must answer the question of what is self-reflection? Bear in mind, though, that you may get a different answer if you were to poll your friends and ask them to define self-reflection.
Self-reflection, which is synonymous with introspection, is simply taking the necessary time to consider, evaluate, think about, and reflect on your attitudes, behaviours, desires, motivations, and thoughts.
It is the journey of self-awareness and self-understanding.
It’s deep diving into your emotions, motivations, and thoughts, and getting to the bottom of why you do the things you do. What is the “why” behind all these things you choose to say, do, act, and focus on?
It is the journey of learning who you really are.
Introspection allows you to look at your life on both a micro- and macro-level:
- At the micro-level, you can analyze your responses to certain events and circumstances.
- At the macro-level, you can analyze your life’s overall trajectory, you can consider where you are heading, ascertain whether you are happy with the trajectory your life is on, and make adjustments when and where necessary.
You can look at self-reflection as a deeper type of learning, one that allows you to maintain all aspects of an experience and understand why it happened, what the consequence or impact was, whether you should allow it to happen again, or simply remember that it happened.
When you tap into not only every experience but also every aspect of it, you can gain clarity over your thinking and get a greater understanding of what matters to you.
Introspection takes discipline and it will require intentionality – you need the strength to pause the chaos going on around you, to disappear into yourself, and to take the time out for self-reflection. It isn’t easy, but it’s valuable.
An important aspect of introspection is its role in personal growth, because you cannot really grow and develop yourself unless you have a deep level of self-awareness.
Self-awareness allows you to identify issues you need to work on within the realm of personal development. Self-awareness is also important in gauging how and in what ways you have grown.
Introspection requires a certain level of courage – it can be scary to look inside and work on yourself, but it is well worth it.
Without introspection and gaining the self-awareness and self-understanding that results from it, you are bound to live your life blind, to possibly suffer unnecessarily because of unresolved issues, and to miss out on all the magic that happens when you develop, grow, and attain self-actualization.
The Importance Of Self-Relfection
Without introspection, you will walk through life never thinking about why you do things or what you’re doing. You will simply move from this thing to the next thing, without ever considering if it’s going well. Very few people want to pause to consider, analyze, or determine what in life is working or not.
The result of this is unfortunate because we only get stuck. For example, if you never take time for self-reflection, there’s a good chance you will stay in a job you hate far longer than you should have. Or you stick with a poor relationship too long.
A lack of self-reflection leaves you running, just trying to keep your head above water even though nothing around you is going well. Life has become a fight to stay afloat, barely surviving when, through self-reflection, you could be thriving.
The process of discovering who you are is exciting! While you may have to deal with painful issues and memories, most who engage in this process find it to be rewarding, gratifying, and fulfilling. And why not? There is nothing better than working on yourself to become the best you can be and living your very best life!
Introspection In Action
How do you carry out introspection? How do you reflect helpfully and appropriately when looking back on yourself and your life?
There are three main ways.
- Use a journal and guide yourself through the process.
- This course provides several workbooks that you can use to begin the journey.
- With a professional therapist who can help you look inward and guide you through self-discovery and healing.
Summary
Now that you understand what introspection and self-reflection are, it’s time to move on to the next lesson, where we’ll look at the benefits of introspection.
Before you do that, however, I’d suggest you download the mindmap (see below) that outlines the overall process, as this will set the scene for what follows.
